My son and I just finished our very first (official!) yoga sequence together! First of all I want to remind you that he is still a baby; in fact, he turns 2 next week. Also, he’s always been a fan of jumping on me during my yoga practice (hence said practice can only really exist behind closed doors or during nap time) and randomly going into Downward Dog once in a while.
But tonight he pulled out my yoga mat, asked me to open it, did Downward Dog on it, and pulled me on the mat and “asked” me to do the same. So I figured, what the hey, he’s old enough for the Little Lotus Toddler class, so why don’t I just “teach” him a “class” right now? I went through a series of very basic poses, and he did them! I can’t believe it. Of course it wasn’t perfect, but he understood the movement and he was so excited about the whole thing! My little guy isn’t speaking in sentences yet, although he does have a good repertoire of words; mostly he expresses himself best kinesthetically (i.e., placing my hands on the mat next to his to let me know he wants me to join him).
We roared together in “Lion”, we yelled “Reach!” in Utt. Hasta in Tadasana, we touched our “toes!”. It was awesome. I’m so proud. I’m hoping to do some yoga with him on a daily basis. I just ordered Yoga for Kids by Liz Lark from the library. Hopefully I can catch him on camera in a pose or two!
